hypocrisy, osculum obscenum

Obscene kiss – 90%

Hames_Jetfield, September 24th, 2021

Improved version of “Penetralia”, put on newer (except for one small exception – about which at the end) songs, that is “Osculum Obscenum”. Improved, because more brutal, better balanced, more interestingly composed (despite the fact that the Swedes are still staring to America) and simply at the highest level from this most true period of Tägtren’s band. Therefore, there will be no great arguments about “Osculum…”, a few classic sentences in the style of “more interesting continuation” and a only mandatory recommendation to check/refresh the album. That should be a suitable editorial and an incentive for the whole cd.

If not, for this purpose just the following as detailed content. On “Osculum…”, the Swedes from Hypocrisy didn’t deicide to deviate significantly from what the extreme death metal was then characterized by – which, of course, is nothing wrong, but only differently placed the accents here and on better diversification of such additions as keyboards, acoustics, black metal harshes (as if a preview of what Broberg will do later in Dark Funeral), general brutality or – on the opposite side – melodies (but distant from those later) – which also turned out to be good for this music. Of course, there is no need to elaborate on the breakthrough of the predecessor, this is an obvious obviousness that can be heard from the first seconds of the album, but I will notice you with another important advantage that “Osculum…” just contains more specific death metal hits (e.g. the title one, “Inferior Devoties”, “Necronomicon” or “Exclamation Of A Necrofag”), which are much better catchy than those from their debut and can boast richer arrangements (which can be heard from the ideas of Peter Tägtren and Lars Szöke – more diverse). It can therefore be said that on “Osculum…” the Swedes managed to create music with double power to “Penetralia” and better using the influences mentioned in the introduction.

Well, so many advantages are enough to show the power of “Osculum Obscenum”. Overall, this release may not bring such a big revolution in Hypocrisy’s discography (as the next album), although it makes up for it with power, atmosphere and overall feeling. And it also has a well-fitted Venom “Black Metal” cover!
