Ritual of Dark Vampyric Spirit – 85%
Taliesin, June 1st, 2006
Before Michael Ford re-animated the spirit of Black Funeral for it’s current ritualistic harsh sound, he simply let the project sit while indulging himself in ritual music and industrial gothic music. Of course while his ritualistic projects had dated back to the early 90’s (take Darkness Enshroud), this was the first time he truly let himself create something purely ritualistic, with little actual music. Of course it is in many ways similar to the excellent ambient pieces on the last two Black Funeral albums, but there is a darker spirit on these recordings.
A slow drum beat, strange sound, and vocals, male and female reading incantations of the vampyric spirit, that is what this album is composed of. The thing about this recording, is that it is not suitable for any day any time listening. Ford truly captured a spirit on this recording of a magical ritual, creating strange atmospheres of darkness. After owning it for several years now, I have heard all the songs, but have been unable to listen through from beginning to end. Not due to the music, but to the feelings it creates. There is something unhuman on this recording, and thus difficult to enjoy.
If you enjoy ritualistic recordings, pick this up for sure. If you enjoy sitting back and listening to an album easily, this is not a good pick, but neither was any of the black metal albums of Black Funeral. Black Funeral attempted and still attempts to create the darkest spirit of man and the paranormal, the music has always been the truest cult, which even most “true” fans of black metal cannot understand. This album is not for everyone, but if you love darkness pick it up.
