The wonders of modern art – 4%

The main premise for this review is this: you can’t produce something of much value, if it’s easy to make. You just can’t. Run a few ways through your mind if you like. Anything of actual value takes time to build. So making a drone metal album like this one here, as stylistically peculiar as it is, isn’t a task that requires much thought or building in any real sense. However “good” one thinks this is and with whatever definition of “good”, it is indeed recorded material that could be made just about on the spot at any hour of the day, any day. At great maximum, all that’s required might be a state of mind. For the “writer” there’s hardly any one point to return to and try to enhance, because it isn’t properly made and wades in its own nothingness, which isn’t being poetic: in the most literal sense, it’s just very little. Oddly careless.

Another central point to be made is an appeal to the reader’s experience as a musician themselves. This is the metal equivalent of when you get that brand new synthesizer and you’ve got no idea how to use it, but you play around with the presets and get some nice sounds right out of the box. You can’t really play for shit, but the sounds are pretty. And it feels good to create something. Heck, you even feel artistic and creative doing it. Sink those fingers in remote shapes into that keyboard, very slowly shifting from one position to the next, and hear the brilliance of sound. Close your eyes: you’re there. Amazing feeling. Only this ain’t what Mozart or Beethoven were doing, thankfully. Yeah I know. I know. It sucks, but, it actually takes both talent and work (yes both, very sorry) to be a musician worth their salt that can, well, compose music. Let alone good music. And a mere concept on its own, ain’t that.

So what does this actually sound like ? Here’s an adequate and concise description for you: this is over an hour of song conclusions. At the end of a track, when there’s repeating power chords with no drums as a closeout, or some kind of distortion feedback or sustain gradually bowing out, maybe a noise sample with reverberating vocals in the back forming an aural wake fading to black. Or if one is familiar with the concept of “sonic artifact”: this is it. But it’s just the sound artifacts. Maybe there’s an album of the actual tracks somewhere and this is just the goofy endings cut out and isolated. No drums. At all. Generally low tuned tunnels of vague high gain saturation and a fat low end. Fancy a listen ? Oh. Who wouldn’t.

The only way this might produce any meaning at all would probably be through indulging in heavy drugs, where the person is so ripped they’ve reverted to toddler-like wonder and IQ points. Even on weed, this would still be boring as shit and a complete drag since, well, it isn’t music. It’s drone. But drone of a particularly lazy kind. It’s not “monotonous” as much as it is plain inactive. It doesn’t claim to have any structure to it, and it does not. This is just simply what you do with your friends when you’re anything but sober, bored, and can’t be fucked to put any thought or effort into the next hour.
