Witching Metal – 80%

dyingseraph84, June 12th, 2010

Witchtrap play old school thrash metal the way it was meant to be played. This EP has such an old school sound to it, there are no blast beats and no technical showing off, just pure metal. The music is fast and violent, every song basically has the same tempo. Witchtrap play thrash with heart and passion for the old school.

The most obvious influence here is Slayer, that much is evident from the first real song, ‘The Maniac’. Other bands that Witchtrap are influenced by are, Onslaught, Razor, Venom, and even early black metal like Bathory. The guitar tone caters to the high end and has a very 80’s sound to it. This whole EP sounds awesome and very old school.

The songs are straight forward and to the point. The all follow the verse/chorus/verse structure, I know that sounds very boring but this EP’s length (6 songs at 23:46) is perfect. Everything here is to the point the EP goes in, punches you in the face, and is out in a flash!

The drumming is not very good here, Witchammmer plays the same beats and does the same fills throughout this EP. I wish there had been more interesting stuff going on back there but there isn’t. The guitar solos are nothing to go crazy over, just a lot of whammy bar abuse very reminiscent of Kerry King from Slayer.

This is a cool EP and a breath of fresh air from all the over saturated retro thrash and groove oriented “thrash” bands out there. This is for all the old school metal maniacs out there who want something that takes them back down memory lane
