After unleashing their fourth full length album earlier this year in the form of Angelic Dread, Pittsburgh-turned-Cleveland death metal stalwarts Nunslaughter continue to prove that they are one of metal’s most prolific acts with yet another split release. While Nunslaughter has been slumming up the streets with their much copied brand of devil metal since 1987, they’ve been known to team up with other nefarious acts throughout the years. In fact, at the time of this writing the band has released fifty split albums in their career. This time around Nunslaughter is joined by Chilean blackened death/thrash metal horde, Perversor, who formed in 2007 and has released a pair of EP’s, a full length and a split with Morbosidad. This is a fast and furious split 7” that features two tracks from each band, with a total playing slightly over ten minutes.
Starting off the split, it’s business as usual for Nunslaughter as they bring two brand new tracks to the table, “Bless the Dead” and “Impure Thoughts”. The band’s trademark devil metal is in full swing, with dirty death metal riffs, blasting drums and Don of the Dead’s vicious snarl. Fast paced and pissed off in all the right places, Nunslaughter’s side is exactly the kind of quick jab to the jugular that everyone has come to expect from Nunslaughter. Even with the two tracks totaling just over four minutes, the band is able to dance between furious death metal riffing and and some dirty, Neanderthal grooving with a solid crunch. These two tracks are dirty and grimy in all of the ways.
Chile’s Perversor have never been known for their subtlety. Their debut full length album, Cult of Destruction and their following EP Demon Metal, released in 2008 and 2010 respectively, boasted slabs of thrashing blackened death metal akin to the originators of South American goat metal, Sarcófago. While the band has a few more years under their belts, the two tracks here are born from the same boiling cauldron of dirty South American blackened metal. The production is much stronger, allowing the guitars a full bodied in which the simplistically bashing riffs take center stage amid blazing fast punk beats and blasts and deep, raspy barks.
It would be hard for any band to outdo Nunslaughter when it comes to playing dirty and grimy devil metal but Perversor certainly gives their elders a run for their money. Despite nearly thirty years of conjuring some of the most vile and barbaric death metal known to man, Nunslaughter shows that they are not slowing down (as if Angelic Dread didn’t already prove that). While both bands bring solid tracks, the ride is over way too soon, with the ten minute playtime seeming far too short. It’s great to see Nunslaughter giving another up and coming act some playtime.
