By just looking at the autopsy photo on the cover you can pretty much tell exactly what this album sounds like: brutal and disgusting bulldozer goregrind/death metal, but its not your typical goregrind/Carcass rip off. Disgorge was clearly influenced by Carcass but they actually have a very unique sound especially on this album. Rather than relying purely on shock value with over the top blasting and pitch shifted vocals, the album is dripping with atmosphere with lots of doomy passages throughout. It really sounds exactly like the cover art looks- a putrid autopsy in a dark moldy basement. The production is dirty and unpolished and fits the music Disgorge play well. You can hear everything clearly enough without anything really getting lost apart from the bass which still isn’t completely buried.
The guitars are very brutal and there are actually memorable riffs which you don’t always get with goregrind. The band definitely takes a lot of influence from classic death metal bands especially with the riffs where I can hear a lot of Autopsy and Carcass influence. The drumming is great and doesn’t overpower the guitars which also happens a lot in this genre, but the bass is pretty much inaudible to my ears most of the time which makes sense considering how low the guitars are tuned and how unbelievably low the vocals are. Speaking of the vocals, they are easily the highlight of the album and possibly the best vocal performance in the entire genre. He alternates from a low gurgle, a low grunt and the occasional high shriek and at times it sounds like hes growling through his nose. Its really sick, and brings the whole putrid package together.
The only real negatives here are the song titles which are basically all medical gibberish which I get what they were going for but it makes it difficult to tell which track is which. The other negative is the samples, which I generally don’t mind, but they are way too long at times and can get pretty annoying. Neither of these really hurt the album all that much though and its worth seeking out just to hear to vocals even if you aren’t a fan of goregrind.
