evil, hammerstorm

Back when I was still getting into black metal, I would simply use the search engine on this website and listened to tons of random bands within the black metal subgenre around the entire globe. Evil, a Brazilian black metal which has made a name for itself by releasing a plethora of different releases in a very short amount of time. They have put out a total of four full-length albums, most of which sound just about average. Brazil has been a hotbed for black metal since the advent of the genre itself, with bands such as Sarcofago and Sepultura being the main forefathers of Brazilian black metal. However, Evil, unlike the aforementioned bands, could be considered more appropriately as a buruzm/darkthrone clone. This doesn’t mean they completely suck, it just means a lack of creativity from the band itself.

Unlike Burzum, Evil do not manage to evoke any real atmosphere with their music because it sounds extremely derivative and lacking any soul. Most songs have the same musical structure and really basic chord progressions repeated ad nauseum without ever truly going anywhere.

To be completely honest, there is not much else I can say about this release. Most songs pass by without leaving any sort of impact on the listener, and lack a certain energy and authenticity which are two essential qualities in music nowadays. Considering the fact that there are far better bands out there who actually take time with creating solid musical material, I feel there is little need for anyone to go out of his way to check this release out.
